Fire Training

DocumentDrills

The Texas Commission on Fire Protection requires 20 clock hours of continuing education for each paid firefighter. The Lamesa Fire

Department meets this requirement by holding departmental drill each month. Drill is held at the Central Fire Station, at 6:30 p.m., on the second Wednesday of each month. Drills usually cover 36 hours of basic fire training.

Volunteer Training Requirements

The State Fireman's and Fire Marshal's Association requires Volunteer Fire Departments to train. The Lamesa Volunteer Fire Department meets this requirement by holding departmental drills twice a month.

Each drill is usually three hours long. Drills are held at the North Fire Station, at 6:30 p.m., on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month.

Annual Fire School

Each year firefighters attend the Annual Fire School at A&M University. They receive 30 hours of training in such areas as Firefighting, Fire Prevention, and Rescue. Sending firefighters to this school gives the city a credit on the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule.

Members also attend area fire schools in Lubbock, Floydada, Brownfield, and others.

Hazardous Materials

Hazardous materials training is required for members of the Hazardous Materials Team. The team meets once a month to train.

The city also requires paid employees to attend certain other training each year. Defensive driving, HIV/aids training, and hazardous communications for example.
