Parents,
We are sending this letter to find out what the interest level is for a Sea Cadet unit here in Lamesa.

Please fill in the area below and return it to school.

This by no means obligates you/your child to enrollment or participation. This is simply to see what community interest is.

What is the U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps?
The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps is a youth program for young Americans, male and female, ages 13 - 18 (11 - 13 for Navy League Cadet Corps) whose objectives are to develop an interest and skill in basic seamanship and in its naval adaptations, to train them in seagoing skills and to teach them patriotism, courage, self-reliance and kindred virtues.

Sea Cadets train aboard Navy and Coast Guard ships and on shore activities. They are authorized by the secretary of the navy to wear navy uniforms appropriately marked with Sea Cadet Corps insignia. There are some 250 units in operation and found in almost every state in the union and Puerto Rico. Over 5000 young americans are participating. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps affords equal opportunity for participation to all american youth without regard to race, color, religion, or sex.

What are the requirements for membership?
Cadets must be unmarried, enrolled in school, have parental consent, and possess good moral character in addition to being interested in the program. Cadets must be prepared to attend and participate at monthly drills.

Will Sea Cadet training detract from schoolwork?
Not likely. Sea Cadet units usually meet one weekend each month during the school year. Training away from home is usually conducted only during vacation periods. Trainings are usually 10 days - two weeks long.

What will kids learn as a Sea Cadet?
Sea Cadets study a broad range of subjects. Some are designed to help them to become better citizens. They study naval history, customs and traditions, seamanship, navigation and similar subjects, which would improve their chances for success, should they decide to join the sea services.

What are the chances for promotion?
Promotion within the Sea Cadets is based on merit. Promising young men and women, upon fulfilling specified qualifications, are given command positions and encouraged to develop qualities of leadership.

Who sponsors the Sea Cadets?
Individual Councils of the Navy League of the United States co-sponsors most Sea Cadet units. The Navy League is a non-profit organization of the U.S. citizens whose objectives are to support the U.S. armed services and assist young americans.

Who instructs the Sea Cadets?
Sea Cadets are instructed by military personnel (former, active, reserve and retired) and by other adult leaders willing to devote their time and knowledge on a volunteer basis.

What is the main purpose of the Sea Cadet training program?

While Sea Cadet units are organized along military lines, the main purpose is to foster good citizenship and an interest and appreciation of our nation’s seagoing military services (mainly the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and the Merchant Marine).

You may access the national website for more information.

Respectfully yours,
Ensign Frank Sanchez, USNSCC
